How to use the Soroban

  • Top bead: Tap it towards the bar to add 5 in that column.
  • Bottom beads: Each bead touching the bar adds 1 in that column.
  • Columns: Read place values from right to left: ones, tens, hundreds, and so on.
  • Try it: Set a number, read the value, then clear the frame and repeat.

How the virtual Soroban works

1. Read one rod

Five above, ones below

The upper bead adds 5. Up to four lower beads add 1 each. Only beads touching the bar count.

2. Follow place value

Ones sit on the right

Move left through tens, hundreds, and thousands. The current value updates after every bead movement.

3. Check, clear, repeat

Accuracy comes first

Check the frame against a target, clear it, and try another. Your best run stays on this device.

How do I read a Soroban?

Each top bead is worth 5 and each bottom bead is worth 1 when it touches the central bar. Read the rods from right to left as ones, tens, hundreds, and higher place values.
