Children's Privacy Notice
Last updated: 17 August 2026
The short version
Public self-registration is unavailable for children under 13. A parent, guardian, or authorised school may contact NumDojo to ask whether an approved managed route can be offered. Contacting us does not create an account or confirm availability. If NumDojo provisions an approved managed profile, we apply age-appropriate defaults. Optional analytics stays off for signed-in minors and free-text messaging is unavailable to under-18 accounts. A configured display name can appear in competition views; otherwise we use Learner. An authorised adult or school should choose a nickname that is not the child's real or full name.
The current under-13 route
- Public registration: self-registration starts at age 13 and asks for an age group rather than a full date of birth.
- Parent, guardian, or school enquiry: use the contact form or email support@numdojo.com. Do not include a child's personal information in the first message.
- Review before any account: NumDojo will explain the current terms and next steps only if a managed route is available and approved. Managed family and school accounts are not open for self-service during the current launch.
The former emailed consent-link flow has been retired. Existing child-created under-13 accounts without verified parent consent remain blocked from sign-in. Learning history is preserved while an authorised managed-account request, rights request, or erasure request is verified. Abandoned records will be handled under a documented retention procedure once it is approved; this notice does not claim a fixed deletion schedule.
Information used for a managed learner
If NumDojo approves and provisions a managed learner profile, we limit its data to what the account and learning service need:
- a username supplied or generated by the authorised adult, or a school identifier;
- a configured display name and optional first and last name;
- an age group, without requiring a full birth date;
- workspace, class, guardian, and teacher relationships;
- lessons, answers, progress, review schedules, assignments, badges, and permitted competition results;
- security and audit records needed to protect the account.
An approved managed child profile does not need a personal email address. It uses a non-deliverable internal placeholder where the database requires a unique account identifier.
Default safety and privacy controls
- No behavioural advertising and no sale of child data.
- Optional analytics is disabled for every signed-in minor, even if an adult accepted analytics on that device.
- Free-text direct, group, guild, and learner classroom chat is limited to adult accounts.
- Competition views use the profile's configured display name or Learner when none is set. Under-13 accounts without an authorised consent basis are excluded.
- Paid subscriptions must be managed by an adult account holder.
- Teachers see only authorised classes and learner information. Guardian contact details are not shown to teachers by default.
Service providers and school use
We use service providers for hosting, email, security, sign-in, and payments. They may process limited learner data to provide those services, under their contracts and our instructions where applicable. We do not describe this as sharing only when required by law. See the Privacy Policy for the current provider categories.
For an approved school-directed account, the school may be the controller and NumDojo may act as its processor for the school's educational use. The exact roles depend on the activity and the written agreement. See School Data Privacy.
Parent and guardian choices
An authorised parent or guardian may contact us about an existing approved learner profile or make an access, correction, export, or deletion request. We verify authority before acting. Use the contact form or email support@numdojo.com. Contacting us does not create a managed profile or confirm that managed accounts are available.
Legal status and contact
These controls are designed to address child privacy requirements, including the US Children's Online Privacy Protection Rule and the UK Children's Code. This notice is not a certification of legal compliance. NumDojo's DPIA, school processing terms, and Online Safety Act risk record require formal owner and professional review before the service is described as fully compliant.
